Improv 4 Teens – Murder Mystery, Minute to Win It, Trivia & More

In addition our improv comedy shows and workshops, we offer a number of interactive immersive options for schools, camps, libraries, community centers and family events. We can also host at our Times Square NYC theater. This article focuses on our mystery programs, but we also have trivia, minute to win it, and other programs. EMAIL for more information.

    WHODUNNIT?

True Crime Dramas are more popular than ever, and so are mystery events, murder or otherwise. We have been regularly working with library teen nights, summer camps, schools and family gatherings. If murder is not the perfect fit, how about WHO STOLE THE SPIRIT CUP, WHO STOLE OUR MASCOT, THE CASE OF THE MISSING (insert anything relevant to your school/community). Not li mm ited to crime family drama, we also can accommodate any style, period of history, etc – Billionair Mystery Mansion, Disco Fever, 1980s, 1950s, 1920s, Greco Roman Antiquity, and more. We have dozens of scenarios from previous shows or can write an original show, or even better, let YOUR teens write the show, completely improvised on the spot.

    • The Full Show: we send our team of four improv comedy players to become characters. A murder happens right in front of your eyes, as the victim falls mid speech. Everyone is a witness and suspect and deputized to help solve the crime in teams of 3-10.
    • CLUE PARTIES Basically one of our detectives serves as EMCEE and lead investigator. In these parties some or all of the participants are suspects. They receive some simple information about their character and relationship to a victim. Everyone has opportunity, means and motive. But the clues lead to one perpetrator. Everyone is deputized to solve the crime.
    • MADCAPPED MYSTERIES: Our unique show, is also the most original show ever created, because it is completely created by your group at the time of the show.

Imagine a live version of Mad Libs, or our popular Improv Game Columns (aka Call ’em’s, Human Mad Libs).

Our lead player, the detective, arrives moments after the discover of a crime/victim. The first few minutes are just like Mad Libs. Our detective tells the story of the crime by promoting your guests to fill in a few blanks. “We just found (points to audience member), you know their name is (points), right, yes, Frank. (From this point on its all improvised) Frank is known in town for (points to audience member), you know his job or (points), right, yes, Frank is the operator of an ice cream truck that everyone loves and cherishes, except at least one of you apparently.”

After the basic crime is established, we meet the towns people. For smaller groups (under 20ish) everyone becomes a character, from friends and family of the victim, strangers that witnessed the some aspect of the crime, and pillars of our community – mayor, chief of police, deputy, Coroner, district attorney, school board, park ranger, specialist from the university, etc.

Now we establish some suspects. Our Detective pics 3-5 characters to join the line up of usual suspects. After a brief interrogation, basically summing up each characters part in the story and relationships, motives and means to commit the crime, the rest of the crowd decides into teams to interrogate suspects, spending 3-5 minutes with each (suspects rotate from team to team).

Finally, teams deliberate and solve the crime, who did it, how they did and why. Also teams pick a best actor award. Once the detective collects all the answers, we have some fun reading the solutions to the crowd. Ultimately one team is picked as the winning solution. The criminal mastermind(s) is identified. We award prizes to the winning team(s). Lastly we award a best actor prize and hear their oscar/Tony award winning speech.

Our shows are all ages friendly and popular at k12 schools, summer camps, community centers (Libraries, theaters, JCC, YMCA, parks and recreation, etc) and family events (birthdays, graduations, scouts, etc). Great for any stage, or we can turn any classroom, gym, meeting room, living room or back yard space into a Comedy club.

    Workshops

Improv is SEL, Social Emotional Learning. Simply playing improv comedy games develops creativity, critical thinking, public speaking, listening, focus, self confidence, self awareness and more.

    Our Governing Principles

    • HAVE FUN but never at another’s expense! – Walt Frasier’s #1 Rule
    • YES AND… #1 Rule in Improv
    • LISTENING is the #1 Skill in Comedy

    Residencies & After School Programming

There are two types of residencies that we offer. One, where our teachers offer shows and one off workshops for the entire population of your school, or even your district. We extend our full day and week rates to neighboring schools.

Two, our teachers work with a group of students for 16+ hours as they learn numerous games, culminating in a final showcase. This can be compressed into a single week, as in a typical summer camp scenario, our stretched out over a full quarter or semester.

In general our rates per hour/show/class are cut as much as in half when booking a series of sessions.

    Professional Development

Professional Development programming for teachers and staff brings the best of our k12 outreach programs and corporate training center into one powerful program.

First and foremost, Improv delivers but needed laughter. Teaching is not easy and you deserve to have some fun.

Improv is a powerful tool in the classroom. Studies show laughter in the classroom increases test scores. Humor develops a better brain, as we compare two otherwise dissimilar topics/items. Laughter is cardiovascular, pumping oxygen to the brain, waking up our students. Laughter reduces stress and builds community bonds. We teach you games you can use before a big test or lecture to bring listening and focus to a premium. Set yourself and your students up for success!

We use improv to teach team building, leadership, sales and service skills. We argue that on any given day, teachers have to do all four, navigating classroom management, interacting with colleagues and department meetings, students, teachers, and administration. Where do sales come in? Every time a student says, “Why should I care?”, “Why do I need to learn math?”, “Why do I need to be on time?”, we have all purpose answers. But improv teaches us to engage an individual, and their specific needs. The #1 Skill in Comedy is LISTENING.

Since 2003 we have been delivering the laughs at teen events, from Times Square NYC shows for students and families to touring k12 schools, camps, community centers and family events. In 2011 we opened up our Times Square NYC comedy school at the requests of many regulars at our off-Broadway shows.

Improv Comedy delivers much needed laughter, now more than ever, while developing valuable life skills: creativity, critical thinking, public speaking, listening, focus, self confidence, self awareness and more. A must for any performer, we use these same games for developing team building, leadership, sales and service skills for corporate clients. We train teens to become student leaders.

WHAT IS IN EVERY CLASS / WORKSHOP

A typical two hour class, workshop or masterclass is a series of games. Everything in Improv is a game, including the skits and songs in our professional shows, as well as every warm up, ice breakers and technique builder. The exact games might vary as per the students and teacher. We have 1000s of games to choose from, and we all have our favorites. Often we have game plan but will switch gears seeing something in a particular class- a level of skill, a need to work on a certain skill set, etc. Sometimes I change up the games just to keep myself fresh and engaged.

Every class and rehearsal starts with the team/class coming together for a warm up game. We might play ZIP ZAP ZUP, PASS THE FACE or other silly fun that gets us playing together, letting go of the outside world and finding both individual and team focus.

Then we play a variety of games building skills in performance, story telling and more. Some games get us to think pit of the box, letting go of judgement, ego and insecurity. Other games train or physical communication skills (pantomime, prop, object work). Many games get us to make better choices in WHO (character, relationship), WHERE (setting) and WHAT (action, plot).

Finally every session involves games one could use in a performance. Applying all our skills learned we put on a show for each other. In addition to working in our skills and ourselves, we generate laughter and a sense of accomplishment.

8-WEEK CLASS, SUMMER CAMP & RESIDENCIES

In our extended classes at our Times Square NYC, or when we send teaching artists to residencies at schools, camps, and community centers, students are exposed to 16-20 hours of classes, finishing in a performance showcase.

We often will include sections in Stand-Up and Sketch comedy, further translating these skills into creative writing.

  • SUMMER COMEDY CAMP Times Square NYC Impov, Sketch & Stand-Up

SUMMER COMEDY CAMP Times Square NYC Impov, Sketch & Stand-Up

HAVE FUN but never at another’s expense! – Walt Frasier’s #1 Rule

Each week is a self contained session with classes in improv and stand-up comedy. Monday starts with a master class in Improv Comedy, introducing a number of warm-up, technique and performance games. Then we move into an open-mic style session where students develop original stand-comedy routines, starting with personal stories of observation and experience. Tuesday – Thursday are more like rehearsals than classes. A series of mock performance sessions develop experienced performers. Every week we introduce new games, review class faves and develop a new 2-3 minutes of stand-up comedy which get presented at our weekly showcase, Friday at 2pm.

We have two to three adult teaching artists plus a number of teen interns every day, allowing us to break into smaller groups based on age and skills level.

YES AND… #1 Rule in Improv

Always say yes! Then support “YES” with words and actions. Never say YES to physical, emotional or mental harm, however, most NOs are we habitual lazy and insecure choices. And in improv oir job is to make our team look amazing. No need to watch our when the rest of the team has our back.

LISTENING is the #1 Skill in Comedy

Listen with your eyes. Listen with the willingness to change. Never think. Simply listen and focus. Make simple choices, Listen & Respond in support of team.

    DAILY HOMEWORK

    • SMILE Start every day with a smile! Physically smiling makes us feel great. Usually we smile when someone makes us feel good. It works both days. YOu can actually loosen stiff muscles and minor aches inside and out. Also, when you lead with a smile most smile back. Ignore that one judgemental hiding in the corner. They will judge you no matter what you do. If you want most folks to smile at you, LEAD BY EXAMPLE!
    • EXPERIENCE and OBSERVE YOU WORLD Every thing you need for comedy is right in front of you. LIVE with wide open eyes and ears. At school & home, on the subway, in the park, at the store etc etc etc things happen to you and to others around you.
    • RECORD YOUR WORLD Keep a journal. What every observe and experience, write it down. Also record your process. Describe every Improv game you play in your own words. EVERY time you get off stage, record how that experience happened. Process your world, your anxieties, fears, joys etc. Getting things out of your head, frees you to focus in the moment.
  • Teen Field Trips, Improv Comedy Shows & Workshops, Times Square NYC

Teen Field Trips, Improv Comedy Shows & Workshops, Times Square NYC

We love performing shows for school groups that visit from around the world. Even more rewarding, leading young talent to amazing heights. But don’t take our word for it….

    FROM TODAY…

“Thank you so much for a WONDERFUL experience today. My students could not stop talking about it on the bus ride back to school. I can’t wait to bring another group next year. Thank you again.”

    • Joanna Beck, Hackensack Middle School

Today, Wednesday, April 17, 2024, we hosted 40 8th graders from Hackensack New Jersey for a show and due to extra time, an impromptu workshop. Our shows are very interactive and musical. Five different games invited students on stage, including sound effects and human mad libs, where students very directly steer the professionals on their path. Human Slide Show, or FREEZE FRAME, has students posing to depict a mock slide show, narrated by our comics. Three Headed Expert and Four Square actually have a student performing along side the pros. The show is framed by 3-4 musical elements, including SING IT, a mock Broadway show improvised upon a single word.

    FROM YESTERDAY…

Walt,We would like to send a massive “THANK YOU” to you and the crew!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your care and support for young adults shines through as someone whose heart is committed to make a difference. I am not sure if you know this but every so often you would make a reference to a life lesson that makes me stop and think and I am sure it resonated with the students. They are all talking about their experiences today.

    • Roy Balgobin, The High School for Arts and Technology booked via Young Audiences New York

On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, we hosted 70 high school seniors for show, workshop and full workshop.

Our workshops allow the students to experience being on stage, playing games they could take back to school and put up a show. We discuss topics like stage freight, team work, basic performance skills, projection, and so much more. IMPROV IS SEL. In our work with corporate groups we use Improv to teach team building, leadership, sales and service skills. Simply playing these games develops creativity, critical thinking, public speaking, listening, focus, self confidence, self awareness and more.

We host student groups from around the world almost daily. In fact, yesterday, our sister company IMPROV 4 KIDS hosted a Bronx elementary school, with 100 k2 students.
