New York City area High School Residency: Stand-Up Comedy Comedy – NYC DOE VENDORS

Stand-Up Comedy at its core is story telling, a combination of creative writing and public presentation. These are skills any student will need to stand out in their future endeavors. And the skills taught in this course transfer to many others. We create leaders and better students, empowered to listen and focus on and off stage. EMAIL for more information. NYC DOE VENDORS

    Finding Our Voice, Agency

One of the amazing side effects of this course, as we create a fun safe space to create and share our stories is each student having a chance to succeed in baby steps. The first time a student gets an unexpected laugh in support of their work, they start to believe and trust in their own worth. Over the course of a few weeks, students develop their own style, their own voice.

    Empowering a Better Creative Process

We teach students how to attack a new project. Just start. Simply brainstorm a list of ideas then get onstage and talk. Then brainstorm details and talk. Comedy is so much easier when we realize, we don’t have to be funny. Not at first. The secret is never TRY to be funny, clever or great. Those are functions of ego and insecurity. Our true talents don’t emerge on the scene until we embrace being ok with not being funny.

    Humor Builds a Better Brain

William Fry, Stanford’s University’s late, great humor Guru, said that humor builds a better brain every time we compare to otherwise dissimilar things.

Now 17, Carolyn is working with pro company, interning as a teacher assistant and more!

It’s not until the third lesson plan that we truly begin to FIND THE FUNNY. We provide numerous ways to up the ante, teach how to trim the fat from unneeded set up, add analogies, exaggerate, consolidate, and the all powerful magic three.

Similarly we start to teach presentation tricks. From day one we discuss the basics of facing audience, projection and diction. If the joke isn’t heard or understood it isn’t funny.

    Putting on a Show

Every class is a mock open mic, a rehearsal for a real performance. Every session leads to a final performance. Having the end goal focuses students. Plus you can get great pics and vids for your school social media and yearbooks.

New York City area High School Residency: Sketch Comedy – NYC DOE VENDORS

Sketch Comedy is a popular source of entertainment with roots as far back as Ancient Greece. This course leads students from brainstorming ideas, developing ideas, writing a final sketch and performing a live show and / or producing original video. The purpose of this course is to get students excited about creative writing, story telling, collaborating with others, and confidence public presentation. Through the lens of this currently popular form of entertainment we introduce students to classical literature, comedic theater and more. EMAIL for more information on bringing our programs to your students. NYC DOE VENDORS (Improv Theater LLC)

    WHY SKETCH COMEDY?

Sketch Comedy is a short play or film usually grounded in a singular comedy purpose. Topics for comedy are as endless, bound solely by the creativity of the writer(s). Sketch Comedy as a class combines cultural arts and language arts. We are basically ELA and THEATER but by presenting to the students as a classroom in Comedy, more students get excited about the process. The class provides a powerful experience and serves as a gateway for students to get excited for further study into literature, writing and public presentation. In this class students will:

    1. Study the history of comedy, from Ancient Greece thru early TV and Radio.
    2. Learn to write an original short play via brain storming exercises, collaboration, first drafts and rewrites, and a final script.
    3. Learn to produce and perform live show and video.

    Producing Final Sketch

Working backwards, let’s discuss how powerful this training is to a student. While this course could lead to a student working at Saturday Night Live by age of 19 like Eddie Murray, Dave Chapelle, or Pete Davidson, most will benefit in more meaningful ways. Our final end product, a live sketch comedy show and/or produced video teaches students how to produce and present content of any kind

The number one fear in his world is public speaking. Sketch Comedy class is possibly the closest scenario to working on a corporate team, whether in marketing, project management and even scientific labs. Creating a fun safe space we develop self confidence fierce and public speaking skills, as well as basic skills in acting for stage and screen.

We work with corporate teams daily to teach presentation and collaboration from skills, using Improv Comedy. This course looks to teach those skills to high school and middle school students. While students share the laughter, they are preparing for be leaders in any industry.

Students live on their devices. We can debate through pros and cons of teens using social media. But unless there is a total societal collapse, chances are, the future is now, and being able to use these devices for good is possibly the most powerful tool a student can learn for their future success.

    Developing Sketch Comedy Scripts

Every TV show – Skech comedy, sitcoms, episodic dramas, soap operas, dramedies, etc – has a writers room. Every week a head writer, called a show runner, hears ideas, assigns writing projects for scenes and episodes. The ROOM is a place to bounce around ideas, read thru scripts, and discuss edits. The show runner greenlights a final script, and the greenlights for production.

This mimics this process. In the early seeks we will have exercises to brain storm ideas and details. Later weeks, we will outline and write a rough draft. Eventually we will produce a final script to be produced live and or as a video.

Along the way we will use the ROOM to discuss, improvise, read drafts, and otherwise work thru ideas to help writers produce a final script.

Meanwhile, students develop a deeper understanding of creativity writing, story telling, characters, settings, plots, themes, and more.

    History of Comedy

The history of comedy is the history of creative writing, philosophy, literature, theater and human civilization. Again, by using a popular form of entertainment, we are able to reach students and peak their curiosity in many areas of academic study. Students become better students of history, language arts and even the sciences. We give academic study a practical application with an end product that students can be proud.

Since 2003 we have been delivering the laughs at teen events, from Times Square NYC shows for students and families to touring k12 schools, camps, community centers and family events. In 2011 we opened up our Times Square NYC comedy school at the requests of many regulars at our off-Broadway shows.

Improv Comedy delivers much needed laughter, now more than ever, while developing valuable life skills: creativity, critical thinking, public speaking, listening, focus, self confidence, self awareness and more. A must for any performer, we use these same games for developing team building, leadership, sales and service skills for corporate clients. We train teens to become student leaders.

WHAT IS IN EVERY CLASS / WORKSHOP

A typical two hour class, workshop or masterclass is a series of games. Everything in Improv is a game, including the skits and songs in our professional shows, as well as every warm up, ice breakers and technique builder. The exact games might vary as per the students and teacher. We have 1000s of games to choose from, and we all have our favorites. Often we have game plan but will switch gears seeing something in a particular class- a level of skill, a need to work on a certain skill set, etc. Sometimes I change up the games just to keep myself fresh and engaged.

Every class and rehearsal starts with the team/class coming together for a warm up game. We might play ZIP ZAP ZUP, PASS THE FACE or other silly fun that gets us playing together, letting go of the outside world and finding both individual and team focus.

Then we play a variety of games building skills in performance, story telling and more. Some games get us to think pit of the box, letting go of judgement, ego and insecurity. Other games train or physical communication skills (pantomime, prop, object work). Many games get us to make better choices in WHO (character, relationship), WHERE (setting) and WHAT (action, plot).

Finally every session involves games one could use in a performance. Applying all our skills learned we put on a show for each other. In addition to working in our skills and ourselves, we generate laughter and a sense of accomplishment.

8-WEEK CLASS, SUMMER CAMP & RESIDENCIES

In our extended classes at our Times Square NYC, or when we send teaching artists to residencies at schools, camps, and community centers, students are exposed to 16-20 hours of classes, finishing in a performance showcase.

We often will include sections in Stand-Up and Sketch comedy, further translating these skills into creative writing.

Then we move into an open-mic style session where students develop original stand-comedy routines, starting with personal stories of observation and experience. LISTENING is the #1 Skill in Comedy

Listen with your eyes. Listen with the willingness to change. Never think. Simply listen and focus. Make simple choices, Listen & Respond in support of team.

    DAILY HOMEWORK

    • SMILE Start every day with a smile! Physically smiling makes us feel great. Usually we smile when someone makes us feel good. It works both days. YOu can actually loosen stiff muscles and minor aches inside and out. Also, when you lead with a smile most smile back. Ignore that one judgemental hiding in the corner. They will judge you no matter what you do. If you want most folks to smile at you, LEAD BY EXAMPLE!
    • EXPERIENCE and OBSERVE YOU WORLD Every thing you need for comedy is right in front of you. LIVE with wide open eyes and ears. At school & home, on the subway, in the park, at the store etc etc etc things happen to you and to others around you.
    • RECORD YOUR WORLD Keep a journal. What every observe and experience, write it down. Also record your process. Describe every Improv game you play in your own words. EVERY time you get off stage, record how that experience happened. Process your world, your anxieties, fears, joys etc. Getting things out of your head, frees you to focus in the moment.

We love performing shows for school groups that visit from around the world. Even more rewarding, leading young talent to amazing heights. But don’t take our word for it….

    FROM TODAY…

“Thank you so much for a WONDERFUL experience today. My students could not stop talking about it on the bus ride back to school. I can’t wait to bring another group next year. Thank you again.”

    • Joanna Beck, Hackensack Middle School

Today, Wednesday, April 17, 2024, we hosted 40 8th graders from Hackensack New Jersey for a show and due to extra time, an impromptu workshop. Our shows are very interactive and musical. Five different games invited students on stage, including sound effects and human mad libs, where students very directly steer the professionals on their path. Human Slide Show, or FREEZE FRAME, has students posing to depict a mock slide show, narrated by our comics. Three Headed Expert and Four Square actually have a student performing along side the pros. The show is framed by 3-4 musical elements, including SING IT, a mock Broadway show improvised upon a single word.

    FROM YESTERDAY…

Walt,We would like to send a massive “THANK YOU” to you and the crew!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your care and support for young adults shines through as someone whose heart is committed to make a difference. I am not sure if you know this but every so often you would make a reference to a life lesson that makes me stop and think and I am sure it resonated with the students. They are all talking about their experiences today.

    • Roy Balgobin, The High School for Arts and Technology booked via Young Audiences New York

On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, we hosted 70 high school seniors for show, workshop and full workshop.

Our workshops allow the students to experience being on stage, playing games they could take back to school and put up a show. We discuss topics like stage freight, team work, basic performance skills, projection, and so much more. IMPROV IS SEL. In our work with corporate groups we use Improv to teach team building, leadership, sales and service skills. Simply playing these games develops creativity, critical thinking, public speaking, listening, focus, self confidence, self awareness and more.

We host student groups from around the world almost daily. In fact, yesterday, our sister company IMPROV 4 KIDS hosted a Bronx elementary school, with 100 k2 students. Located just one block from the Colbert show stage door in Midtown Manhattan, less than a 5 minute walk from every Broadway theater, we have two theater spaces with over 200 seats combined. Further we tour k12 schools, camps, community centers and family events DC to BOSTON and beyond every week.
